Alpine Evening

2

Lesson

I keep returning, with curiosity and joy, to mountain imagery in my paintings and sketchbooks. In this video I’ll share the various iterations of the imagery that I developed over several months. There’s lots of room for discovery within simple imagery. When we create projects or themes that have some limitations - focused imagery, limited colour schemes or supplies - we actually have more freedom to explore. I hope this inspires you to make use of a sketchbook as part of your practice.

Minimal paintings can be fabulous, but sometimes it takes many repetitions to make a painting that really sings; the brush flows just right, the colours blend just so, the granulation is intriguing and lines are compelling. Painting in this way can be a performance, which isn’t to intimidate you but rather release you of the expectation that every single painting will be a success. We rehearse for the performance! Practicing colour blending, painting and drawing elements independently and in harmony is preparation for your successful paintings. In this lesson we will move from exploration and practice into a finished painting.

Let's begin the lesson...

I also want to share with you how you to continue your watercolour exploration as an art journaling page. Working in my Handbook Journal Co. Watercolour Sketchbook, I use the same painting techniques, adding a sparkle of silver snow and a haiku that I wrote to express how I feel in the mountains.

A haiku is a Japanese poem that is three lines long, with with five syllables in the first line, seven in the second, and five in the third. Trying writing your own haiku. Alternatively, you could free-write a journal entry or add a quote about the mountains or winter - whatever feels best to you!
